What If That “God Thing” Was Actually Just… A Thing?

I’ve never really liked the phrase, “that’s such a God thing.”
Not because I don’t believe in God — I do. Deeply.
I just think the phrase is… well… kind of silly.

People usually say it when something good happens to them:

• You got the job? “God thing!”
• A tree branch fell on your car and forced you to talk to the insurance agent you later married? “God thing!!”
• You snagged the last parking spot at Chipotle? “TOTAL God thing!!!”

But here’s the thing: when something good happens for you, it’s often not so good for someone else.
You got the promotion… Earl didn’t.
Your kid made the travel team… Colleen didn’t.
Think her mom is out showing everyone how she knows, “Wow, that was such a God thing?”

I think I know the heart behind it. I really do. It’s meant to celebrate something meaningful.
But here’s my issue:

EVERYTHING is a God thing.

All of it.
The good.
The bad.
The confusing.
The joyful.
The stuff we wish never happened.

If God is real — and I believe He absolutely is — then He’s not only present in the convenient, Insta-worthy moments.

He’s also present in:

• cancer
• breakups
• death
• addiction
• job loss
• infertility
• mental health battles
• divorce
• even the choices humans make that break His perfect heart

He’s not absent from those places.

And in my opinion, He’s also not up there flipping switches like some cosmic air-traffic controller:

“Let’s make that branch fall.”
“Let’s delay this flight by 49 seconds.”
“Let’s toss in a flat tire so they meet their future spouse.”

I just don’t think that’s His vibe.

Now — full honesty — I acknowledge that God could work that way.
He’s God. I’m not.
He can micromanage the coordinates of every falling leaf if He wants to.
I just personally don’t believe He’s up there, flicking switches and choreographing every closing subway door.

I think He created a breathtaking world, gave us free will, and sometimes… life happens.

Physics happens.
Biology happens.
Human choices happen.
Consequences happen.

God isn’t manipulative.
He’s not petty.
And He’s definitely not bored, flippantly planning “Jake-from-State-Farm” love stories.

He’s perfect.
We’re not.

And our tiny pea-brains love to pretend we can think like Him.

But let’s be honest:

**If God were small enough to be fully understood,

He wouldn’t be big enough to be worshipped.**

So no — I don’t believe He micromanages every swaying blade of grass.
But I do believe something even more beautiful:

**He is unbelievably personal.

Unbelievably present.
Unbelievably loving.

I believe He knows me.
Not vaguely.
Not from a distance.
Personally.

And sometimes, I think He gives me what I like to call a D-Tap.

Now, a D-Tap is not God “showing up.”
He didn’t suddenly appear — He’s already here.
It’s not an entrance, it’s a reminder.

A D-Tap is God leaning in and reminding me what has always been true:

“Hey D… I’m here.”

It’s not dramatic.
It’s not loud.
It’s not for show.
It’s presence —
The God who stays, nudging me so I can know.

A D-Tap might show up in:

• a moment of clarity
• a conversation I needed
• a lyric
• a verse
• a coincidence I can’t explain
• a reminder I didn’t even know I needed

Not God nitpicking my life.
Just God letting me feel His nearness in a moment my easily distracted brain might otherwise miss.

Present.
Faithful.
Steady.
My Father.

And honestly?
I’ll take that over “God thing!” any day.

So yeah — I get D-Taps.

Do you?

Sure, if your name is Darren.
Kelly? Maybe you get K-Taps.
Leann? L-Taps.
Theo? T-Taps.
If your name is Dawn, sweet! You’re all synced up.

It’s personal.
It’s intimate.
It’s God showing you He’s got you.

It’s all you…
And it’s all Him.

So here’s my question…

What if God has been tapping you on the shoulder all along?  For you —
not to impress everyone else,
not to help you look spiritual,
not to give you something to post for Zuckerberg…

…but simply to say:

“Hey… I’m here. In all of it. I never left.”

What if it was never about you showing others something,
and always about Him showing you something?

And maybe — just maybe —

**the real God thing wasn’t the one you chose to post,

but the God who chose you first… and loves you most.**

  1. There’s so much I love about this post, Derrick.

Yes everything is a “God thing.” I love the reminder in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 which says we’re to “be thankful in all circumstances.” Notice it doesn’t say be thankful FOR all circumstances… it says IN all circumstances.

“If God were small enough to be fully understood, He wouldn’t be big enough to be worshipped” is also truth. This is where faith comes in. As a human, I can’t handle tons of details all at once, but why would I assume He can’t? He’s GOD. The creator of the universe. the Bible tells us “not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it” so yeah that’s a great reminder that I can’t apply my own human sensibility to God.

I could go on, but I’ll just close by saying your post was a blessing to me today. 🙂

  2. Love it we all need tapped from time to time.

He is always present – it is us that wander then begin to ignore HIS presence or get too busy to walk and talk with him. If we are in HIS Word, we are tuned in to hear from HIM!

  3. D-tap often, plus undeniable miracles that others witnessed and then they become believers! Yes, YHWH is ALMIGHTY, and we cannot ever know what He knows, but, that’s why Jesus came! The visible representation of the invisible God! People touched Jesus Christ and he is coming back!
Right now, angels still come to earth and intercede for people. Holy Spirit lives in us, and we live in Jesus, and Jesus lives in YHWH! Perfect 💕 👌 😊 👍 💕

  4. Thanks for putting this into words, Derrick. Right there with you on this. The more the holy spirit lives in us, the more we can realize that God is always present.

  5. A-Tap-This is on point as we study the word and embrace the dwelling of the Holy Spirit We are prone to be Quick to listen. However the challenge for me is being a Doer not just a Listener. Adam did nothing when Eve was being tempted from what I have read, my prayer is not to hold back from speaking or doing something God has asked me to for Him which may or may not have a blessing for me on the other side. GOD IS Thanks D”
